New Zealand Investment Network
Posted on October 3, 2007 @ 11:46:44 AM by Paul Meagher

The New Zealand Investment Network (www.newzealandinvestmentnetwork.co.nz) is the latest site to join the Angel Investment Network. New Zealand has a strong economy and high standard of living so is well poised to be an excellent addition to the network. Wikipedia is a good resourse to learn more about New Zealand. Tourism is a strong sector of the NZ economy and I would love to visit Christchurch, Aukland and Waikato. My reason for wanting to visit Waikato would not just be for the tourism, but because it is a world leader in machine learning and I've devoured the book Data Mining: Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques that discusses some of their research and perspective. A land of beauty and brains.

Ireland Angel Investment Network
Posted on June 7, 2007 @ 08:43:50 PM by Paul Meagher

The Angel Investment Network has been expanded to include the Ireland Angel Investment Network (www.ain.ie). The economy of Ireland has taken off over the last decade on the strength of its entrepreneurial spirit. Ireland should bring lots of interesting investment proposals to the network.

Midwest Investment Network
Posted on June 7, 2007 @ 08:31:16 PM by Paul Meagher

The Angel Investment Network has been expanded to include the Midwest Investment Network (www.midwestinvestmentnetwork.com). The Midwest Investment Network site serves the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin. You can consult the wikipedia entry for the Midwest to learn some history and facts about the Midwest USA.

Relaunch of the Angel Investment Network
Posted on May 24, 2007 @ 06:28:48 PM by Paul Meagher

For the last 8 months Datavore has been busy working on an upgrade to all the Angel Investment Network sites. On Friday of last week that upgrade was finally launched. To give you an idea of the magnitude of this upgrade the core Deal Flow Network (DFN) software went from DFN v3.6 to DFN v4.2, meaning there were 6 major unreleased upgrades incorporated into the final released upgrade. Many of the earlier upgrades were backend upgrades to the database structure and code base, while many of the latter upgrades focused on Web 2.0 front end improvements. In addition to the backend and front end upgrades there were significant changes to the business model of the sites with the addition of an extensive Premium Services offering.

Datavore would like to thank all the Angel Investment Network site admins for their patience, suggestions, assistance, and financial support in bringing this major upgrade to fruition.

Hardware and software upgrades
Posted on December 18, 2006 @ 09:00:19 PM by Paul Meagher

Datavore has completed hardware and software upgrades for the main production server and a software upgrade for its secondary production server. The main server is running new hardware and the most recent version of the Fedora Core operating system. We have also upgraded all web application software to the latest versions. The most critical software upgrade was a version upgrade from PHP v4* to PHP v5.20. We have been anxious to get PHP upgraded to the latest version on our production servers and this is finally the case. This upgrade was performed in order to help ensure that in the next year Datavore clients are hosted on secure, reliable and high-performance software and hardware. Datavore servers are located in secure data centers with lots of bandwidth and redundant connectivity to the internet.

This project involved developing a suite of web applications for home owners, contractors and site administrators. RTSR chose Datavore for this project because of Datavore's expertise in developing business-to-consumer networking applications for the Angel Investment Industry.

Angel Investment Network upgraded to Gyro v5.1
Posted on May 27, 2006 @ 03:00:43 PM by Paul Meagher

The last few months have been very busy and productive which unfortunately meant that Datavore.com has not been updated much lately. I would like to announce that all the Angel Investment Network (AIN) sites have been been upgraded to Gyro v5.1 and are on board now with all the rest of my clients (who are also running the same Gyro version now). Gyro v5.1 is the Content Management System component of those websites and is complemented by the Deal Flow Network component (DFN v3.6).

I am also gradually getting back into blogging again on phpmath.com.

VANSDA.ca upgraded to Gyro v5.0 plan
Posted on March 7, 2006 @ 09:56:41 AM by Paul Meagher

VANSDA, or the "Valley African Nova Scotia Development Association", is a not-for-profit development association that helps African Nova Scotians develop and find opportunties for work and training. VANSDA is a long-time client of Datavore's. Datavore has upgraded VANSDA.ca to the Gyro v5.0 plan and launched the upgraded site yesterday. Once clients are on the Gyro v5.0 plan their probability of success increases dramatically, or at least Datavore likes to think so :-)

The Gyro v5.0 components that Datavore evolved for this project were the Office Tools Applications (i.e., Staff Intranet), Job Board Applications, the Company Directors plugin and the core Gyro v5.0 Staff Manager Application (e.g., set "admin" and "staff" permission levels for new or existing "Staff", option of using additional fields to collect staff contact info and staff bio info, option to display staff bios on the site using staff bio data).

The core Gyro v5.0 Content Management Applications (i.e., Site Builders) are now on a more regular improvement schedule with easier methods of distributing those improvements to those who have joined the Gyro v5.0 plan. Datavore's current priority is to get all existing and new clients on the Gyro v5.0 plan.

The number and quality of Gyro v5.0 plug in components has substantially increased on this web development iteration. If Datavore does not currently have a plug in component to directly meet a clients needs, Datavore should be able to use an existing Gyro v5.0 plug in component as a starting point that can substantially reduce development time.

Datavore develops affordable and quick-to-market database-driven web sites and web applications using the mature Gyro v5.0 Content Management System and Plugin Components as a flexible and powerful starting point for achieving your current and evolving visions of success.

Gyro v5.0 released!
Posted on February 5, 2006 @ 09:49:11 PM by Paul Meagher

Datavore is pleased to announce the re-launch of the Kentville Career Resource Centre. The site is powered by the lastest version of the Gyro platform.

Gyro v5.0 offers a set of Gyro CMS Applications augmented by a library of shared components called Gyro Plugins. Gyro v5.0 currently offers a selection of 10-12 plugins. There are about 10-12 more web applications of varying size and complexity that Datavore will be "componentizing" in the v5.0 series as additional Gyro Plugins. These plugins can be redeployed "as is" or "customized" to the particular needs of a client.

Gyro v5.0 is the result of 5 years developing the core CMS applications and plugin applications and a conscious effort in Gyro v4.0 to Gyro v4.8 versions to refactor the Gyro code base towards a more componentized client-server software architecture compatible with modern versions of all the open-source LAMP server software Datavore currently uses.

Antivirus scanning support enabled
Posted on January 12, 2006 @ 09:48:53 AM by Paul Meagher

Datavore now performs server-side virus-scanning on all incoming emails. Any emails containing viruses will be automatically deleted so that Datavore clients never have to deal with them.

SpamAssassin filtering now in place
Posted on January 9, 2006 @ 01:17:35 PM by Paul Meagher

Datavore has been working on the EmailMaster subsystem quite a bit lately. In addition to upgrading all email system components, Datavore has also added the #1 opensource antispam software to the mix:

All incoming mail is now being passed through SpamAssassin. Messages which score 5.0 or higher have their subjects prefixed with "*****SPAM*****". Messages scoring more than 12.0 will not be accepted.

All Datavore clients who use EmailMaster for their email might begin noticing *****SPAM***** in their email message titles. This is the reason why.

Site launch: reseaufinancierfrancais.com
Posted on September 2, 2005 @ 12:12:30 PM by Paul Meagher

Site launch: reseaufinancierfrancais.com

Datavore Productions is pleased to announce the launch of Réseau Financier Français. The site is integrated with the Angel Investment Network and allows France entrepreneurs to distribute their investment proposals to Angel Investors in France, Canada, UK and the USA. Likewise, Angel Investors from France may view entrepreneur proposals from France, Canada, UK and the USA. The French Canadian site, Investisseurs Providentials, is probably the most natural partner for the France Angel Investment Network as both sites use Français as the main language. It will be interesting to see how many Angel Investors take advantage of the multilingual nature of the network and elect to receive proposals in both English and Français.

Stay tuned for announcements of some more new sites next month.

This article will describe the evolution of my engine from a sample program to a full library of portable software rendering functions, and document this library, called pGL (portable GL). The library interface is based on OpenGL (as much as a set of TI-85 programs can be based on C), because it is very simple and easy to use.

Dedicated Server Setup Checklist
May 28, 2007 4:25 pm
You’ve outgrown shared hosting and decided to start renting a server of your own. Since you’re still on a tight budget, you want an unmanaged server, where full responsibility for configuring and managing the server is yours. These are the steps I go through every time I set up a new server for web and database hosting.

Online Mathematics: Scalable Vector Graphics
May 6, 2007 10:50 am
Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is the open source Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) recommendation for two dimensional vector graphics. The combination of SVG and JavaScript is a powerful platform for creating interactive graphics, comparable to Flash and Java. SVG has been overlooked, however, partly because of incomplete browser support. This situation improved significantly in 2006 with the release in of Firefox 1.5 and Opera 9, both with native SVG capability. The first part of this article reviews the current status of SVG implementation and offers several examples with a mathematical flavor. The second part, for developers, explains one of the examples in detail.
